What to take to a wedding dress appointment
Sharing wedding inspiration with friends, dreaming up event ideas, and of course, the tingly anticipation you feel as the date approaches – the lead-up to your wedding is almost as exciting as the big day itself. But it’s not until you try on your first wedding dress that you imagine walking down the aisle.
Wedding dress shopping isn’t as simple as seeing a dress you like on a rack and picking a size. You want to look, and more importantly, feel your absolute best on your special day. It’s all in the details – fit, form, length and style. Your wedding dress should feel just right.
You may have already researched the shopping process and found that you need to make a wedding dress appointment in Melbourne. Designers like to see you one-on-one so that we can give you recommendations tailored to your body shape and style.
Although dress shopping can be fun, it can get stressful if you don’t come prepared, and you tend to make the best decisions when you’re feeling calm. So, in honour of making your experience a positive one, here’s a quick guide on things to take to your first wedding dress appointment.
Your wedding dress inspiration and ideas
If you’re up to the stage of wedding dress shopping, we’re assuming you have an idea of your dream wedding dress. Maybe you’ve set up a Pinterest board, saved looks on Instagram or flicked through online magazines.
Coming to your wedding dress appointment with at least an idea of what style of dress you’re planning to wear will make the selection process less overwhelming. It will also save you a whole lot of time! We always recommend trying on all types of silhouettes in your appointment as we find that many brides end up falling in love with a dress they didn’t think they wanted to try.
Here are some things to have in mind when finding inspiration:
The style of dress you would like to wear, e.g. gown, trumpet, empire
The fabric you like, e.g. lace, silk, sequined
The theme of your wedding
The colour of your wedding dress
The season you’re wedding falls in
Your budget

The style of shoes you’re going to wear
Shoes are often the one item people forget when they go wedding dress shopping. Dresses look a lot different when you’re wearing shoes, especially heels. And the style of shoes will affect the length of your dress and overall look.
Whether you’re going for a short tea dress or a wedding gown, it’s a good idea to bring shoes. Haven’t chosen your shoes yet? That’s okay! We recommend bringing a similar style of shoe, so you can get a feel of how your dress will look.
Nude or seamless underwear or shapewear
When it comes to what to take to a wedding dress appointment, your bright red frilly underwear is not on the list! We don’t judge your choice of underwear, but it will be easier to get a feel for what your dress will look like on the day if you bring along appropriate undergarments.
Nude, seamless underwear is a good choice for wedding dress shopping. We also recommend bringing a nude bra (strapless/convertible), as well as any shapewear you think you’ll wear. If you’re planning on trying on different styles of dresses, it might be a good idea to bring various underwear to suit the style of the dress.
Hair accessories and a semi-made-up face
Just like shoes can give you a better idea of your silhouette, makeup will help you view your dress from a wedding day perspective. Of course, we’re not suggesting you arrive in a full face of makeup, but wearing a little more than usual will help you get a feel for your wedding look.
Don’t worry. You don’t need to get your hair professionally styled before you arrive either. Instead, we recommend bringing hair ties, bobby pins and any hair accessories you’re planning to wear on the day. That way, you can give yourself a quick wedding hairstyle while you try on different looks.
One to three special people in your life
What to take to a wedding dress appointment? We saved the most important part until last! Take friends or family members you trust. Choose people with a calming presence and opinions you value. Just be mindful that wedding dress shops may have a limit to how many people you can bring. We recommend bringing no more than 2-3 people to your appointment.
